Sidebars

What Are Sidebars?

Sidebars are the narrow area of information beside the main content of a page (or below the main content on a phone screen). MADD Chapters websites have sidebars on the right side of all pages other than the Homepage and the Giving page. All pages have the same sidebar content.

Most Chapter/CL websites have been set up with three sections in the sidebar:

  1. List of the other pages in the same section: For example, on the Victim/Survivor Services page, all other pages in the Services & Programs section of the site are listed in the sidebar. This helps visitors find related content for a topic. (Not all pages have this sidebar section.)
  2. Make a Donation: An invitation to donate to the Chapter/CL with a PayPal donation button or link to the Giving page.
  3. Latest News: The three most recent news posts (including MADD Canada national news releases and Chapter-specific news posts).

We ask that you keep these three sections in your sidebar because they improve the usability of your website.

How to Add a Section to the Sidebar

If you want to add something to the sidebar, start by going to Appearance > Widgets.

On the right side of the page are the available sidebar areas. We only use the Main Sidebar area. Most sites already have a Subpages widget, a Text widget, and a Recent Posts widget. These correspond to the sidebar sections listed above.

On the left are the available “widgets” that can be added to the sidebar. See the description of frequently used widgets below:

Adding Text

To add a text section to the sidebar, find the Text widget on the left side of the page and drag it to the Main Sidebar area. The widget will open and you can add a title to it and the text content. You can include links and images in the content in the same way as on regular pages (see Editing a Page Using the Classic Editor). Then click the Save button to save it. Go to a page on the front end of your site to check that it looks the way you want it to.

Adding an Image

If you just want to add an image, find the Image widget on the left side of the page and drag it to the Main Sidebar area. Add a title (optional) and click the button to upload an image. Click the Save button to make it live. Go to a page on the front end of your site to check that it looks the way you want it to.

PLEASE NOTE: Before you upload an image, ensure that the image is suitable for publishing to the web. Ensure that you have the right to use the image and that it is the correct size. An image need not be larger than 500 pixels wide for uploading to the sidebar. You should never upload images directly taken from a camera without first resizing. Here is an easy-to-use program (Windows only) for resizing your photos.

Upcoming Events

Use the Events widget to display a list of your upcoming events in the sidebar. (Learn how to add events to your site on the Events Calendar Tutorial page; events must be added this way first in order to use the Events widget.) To add the list of Events, find the Events widget on the left side of the page and drag it to the Main Sidebar area. Add a title and complete the rest of the fields. Click the Save button to make it live. Go to a page on the front end of your site to check that it looks the way you want it to.

Social Media Links

You can display social media icons that link to your social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Find the ‘Total – Social Links’ widget on the left side of the page and drag it to the Main Sidebar area. Set the style of the icons and enter the web addresses for your accounts. Click the Save button to make it live. Go to a page on the front end of your site to check that it looks the way you want it to.

There are many other widgets to choose from as well!

How to Remove a Section from the Sidebar

There are two options for removing a section from the sidebar: deleting the widget or saving the widget for later.

Deleting a Widget

If you want to remove a widget and you don’t think you’ll need it again, you can delete it permanently. Go to Appearance > Widgets. Click on the widget you want to remove. At the bottom on the widget, click Delete.

Saving a Widget for Later

If you want to remove a widget but think you may use it again, you can save it for later. Go to Appearance > Widgets. Click and drag the widget down to the bottom of the page under Inactive Widgets. The widget will no longer show in the sidebar, but it will be saved for later use. If you want to use it again, drag it from Inactive Widgets back to the Main Sidebar area.
