Oakville, Ontario – Starting today, the public can help support MADD Canada’s education programs and victim/survivor support efforts by making a donation at any of the more than 660 LCBO stores throughout Ontario.

During LCBO’s annual December Giving Back In Our Community campaign, customer service representatives will invite patrons to add a $2, $5 or $10 donation to their purchase to benefit MADD Canada and four regional children’s hospitals: Children’s Health Foundation, McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation, SickKids Foundation and Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Foundation. Donation boxes for MADD Canada will be also displayed at LCBO checkout counters until December 31.

The funds raised support: the production and delivery of MADD Canada’s School Assembly Program, a film and in-class curriculum that educates students in Grades 7 – 12 about the risks of impaired driving; the production and delivery of SmartWheels, a new mobile classroom which is visiting Ontario elementary schools to educate students in Grades 4 – 6 about the risks of alcohol, drugs and driving; and victim outreach and support services to Ontario residents who have been impacted by impaired driving.

“Our partnership with MADD Canada to help to stop impaired driving and to support those affected is an important way that we work to make a difference in the lives of children and youth across Ontario,” said George Soleas, President and CEO, LCBO. “Last year, through our Giving Back in Our Community campaign, we raised over $2.4 million for MADD Canada and we know our generous customers and dedicated staff are ready to beat that record this year – supporting not only victim services, but initiatives like the School Assembly Program and the newly-launched SmartWheels mobile RV classroom, both of which raise awareness among students about the risks and consequences of impaired driving.”

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and alcohol and/or drugs are involved in more than half of those crashes. SmartWheels and the School Assembly Program enable MADD Canada to open a dialogue with young people before they begin driving or are faced with decisions about drug or alcohol use, and continue the conversation right through high school. MADD Canada’s education programming provides young people with the knowledge and tools to help them stay safe and to make responsible decisions.

“With the incredible support we receive from LCBO, its staff and its customers, MADD Canada’s youth education programming offers powerful and ongoing education about the risks of impaired driving to students from Grades 4 all the way to Grade 12,” said Patricia Hynes-Coates, MADD Canada’s National President.

Thanks to LCBO’s Giving Back in Our Community campaign, SmartWheels and the School Assembly Program can be delivered throughout Ontario at no cost whatsoever to the schools or the students.

MADD Canada thanks the public for its support when shopping at the LCBO from December 1 – 31.
